“Klavierstuck IX,” Karlheinz Stockhausen

Instrumentation: Piano

Style: Modern

Karlheinz Stockhausen (1928-2007)

The beginning of the piece is just the same note played over and over again. This is mostly likely done to make the listener focus on the rhythm more than the notes themselves. After a great deal of time, the notes change to a slow rising eighth notes. After this brief intermission, the same note is played again and again, then followed by sustained long whole notes.

Overall, this is an obviously modern piece that mainly consists of a repeated note and few other notes briefly dispersed in the piece.
